Center Receives State Engineering and Science Recruitment Grant

Lubbock — The Texas Tech University T-STEM Center has received $29,700 in funding from the Texas Education Agency to develop curriculum materials, teacher training opportunities and education support resources to increase recruitment of minority populations.

The grant is part of the agency’s State Engineering and Science Recruitment (SENSR) Fund, designed to implement programs that support the recruitment of women and minorities into engineering and science programs at Texas institutions of higher education. The center’s funds are one of seven grants awarded to the Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering (TAME), a partner of the T-STEM Center.

“The missions of the T-STEM Center and our partners at TAME align perfectly with the goals of the SENSR Fund,” remarked John Chandler, Ph.D., a director of the T-STEM Center. “We look forward to collaborating together to enact our plans for attracting traditionally underrepresented populations to science and engineering careers.”

The State Engineering and Science Recruitment Fund grant was awarded to four entities to help fund a total of 17 projects. Approximately $394,920 was awarded for the 2007-2008 fiscal year.

Other projects funded as part of the Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering proposal include: “Women in Engineering Program” 2008 Introduce a Girl to Engineering; Mentoring and Enrichment Seminar in Engineering Training (MESET); Minority Introduction to Engineering (MITE); Statewide Math/Science Competition; TAME Trailblazer; and “Women in Engineering Program” UT Women Engineering at UT (WE@UT).
